Hide & Sole is the oldest licensed Birkenstock repair center in Missoula, Montana. We have repaired Birks in-store since 1978 and continue to do repairs for satisfied customers nationwide.
We repair any Birkenstock built on the cork sandal footbed, including both classic and soft. This includes Birkenstock sandals, clogs, and close-toed shoes like the London. We also provide certain repairs on other styles, including the Papillio by Birkenstock fashion line, and certain Birk sneakers. Please call or email for consultation on these styles before shipping, or stop by if you’re in the area.
Our Repair Services
Resole vs. Rebuild? A Resole is when you only need to replace the sole on your Birkenstocks or Haflingers. A Rebuild is when we replace the entire cork footbed on Birkenstocks (we do not replace the cork footbeds on Haflingers). We can also do spot repairs on cork footbeds if there is only minor damage.

Footbed Information
Classic vs. Soft Footbeds
Both footbeds have the same arch support that Birkenstock is known for and are made from cork, latex, & jute. The soft footbed has a layer of memory foam along the top of the footbed to provide more cushion than the classic footbed.
If you are unsure what footbed you currently have: the Birkenstock name on the suede footbed liner is printed in black (or yellow) on the Classics and printed in blue on the Soft Footbed. You can also look for the blue Soft Footbed logo in the heel cups.
Wide vs. Narrow Footbeds
Birkenstocks are made in two widths: Regular/Wide and Narrow/Regular. Regular/Wide is the most common width for Birks built on a cork footbed. To determine the width of your Birks, look for the footshape on the suede footbed liner.
-
Do you wear through the heel part of the soles much faster than the rest of the sole? We can add a very durable patch of soling to just the heel area.
Heel taps are compatible with the Birkenstock EVA & Vibram Woodstock soling, but cannot be combined with the Vibram XS City soling. (We can also add taps to the toe area, but this is much less common.)
-
Is there a buckle that is loose or has detached from the uppers? We can reattach it with staples or stitching.
-
Did you lose or break a buckle? We can replace it with a genuine Birkenstock buckle.
Available buckle colors: Black, Nickel, Antique Zinc, Antique Brass, and Antique Copper
-
Did your dog snack on your leather straps, or maybe the Birkibuc uppers have ripped? We can fix most damaged uppers by patching or replacing the straps with leather we have in the shop. We will try our best to color match with the leather, or you can pick a contrasting leather for a pop of color. Please email our cobbler (micah@hideandsole.com) with pictures of your damaged uppers to make sure they are repairable before sending them to us.
-
Have you worn through the sole into the cork footbed? We can fix that. The footbeds may also develop cracks as you wear them, the outer cork walls can break down from exposure to the elements, or maybe a furry friend snacked on the cork? We can fix that too! If the cork damage is too extensive we can replace the entire footbed with a full rebuild.
-
If the toe loop on your Mayari sandal has come unglued or ripped, we can reattach or replace the loop. We'll have to do a resole to fix this, but depending on how much life is left in your soles, we might be able to do just a partial resole as a cheaper option. If we replace the loop we will do our best to get a color close to the current uppers, or you can pick a contrasting leather for a pop of color.
-
If the thong piece on your Gizeh or Ramses sandal is damaged, we can replace it. We'll have to do a resole to fix this, but depending on how much life is left in your soles, we might be able to do just a partial resole as a cheaper option.
-
We can provide custom lifts on one or both of your Birkenstocks. Or maybe you want to have one of the platform styles resoled or rebuilt? Although we can't reuse the current platform soles, we can reconstruct a platform to your desired height.
-
Are your Birkenstocks or Haflingers not flashy enough for you? Do you want to cruise through the world feeling supported and sparkly?! We can add that little extra sparkle to your life with our glitter cork seal service. We add biodegradable glitter to the cork seal so the edges of your footbeds shine without worrying about getting glitter all over your house.
*Pricing for these services depends on whether they are combined with Resole/Rebuild, or done as a standalone service.
Other Repair Services / Add-Ons
Soling Materials & Color Options
-
The standard soling material on most Birkenstock footwear. The least durable of our soling options.
Color options: Black, Brown & White
-
Cobbler’s favorite. This soling is a combination of EVA and rubber. The addition of rubber makes it more durable than the standard EVA, and provides a little more cushion than the EVA.
Color options: Black & Brown.
-
This soling is recommended when you need non-slip indoors. It is designed to disperse water and grip flat indoor surfaces such as kitchen & hospital floors. The most durable of our soling options.
Color options: Black only.
(**The Vibram XS City soling is not recommended for icy conditions! When near/below freezing, this material will stiffen and lose a lot of its gripping ability. Let's be real though - Birkenstocks in general are not recommended for icy conditions, but if you plan to wear them in the winter, the recommended sole is Vibram Woodstock.**)
