The Aussie Dogs Original Sheepskin Footwear story begins in the early 1980s when surfer Chris Watt took a vacation to the South Pacific in search of some of the world's most famous waves. In order to supplement the costs of the journey, Watt took along "Poncho Villa" style Mexican ponchos, something he hoped the surfers there would love to wear. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he purchased 10 ponchos in hopes to sell them once he arrived. Once in New Zealand, Watt contacted a local surf shop and pitched them the idea to have their surfers wear the ponchos. Without hesitation, the store bought all 10 ponchos. It was with this sale that Watt's business of import and export was born.
Later during his surf vacation, Watt discovered a pair of Australian sheepskin boots that were popular among the local surf crowd. The surfers referred to the boots as "ugly boots" because while they were comfortable and warm, their overall look and design needed polishing. With a few adjustments to the functionality and style, Watt saw the potential to start a major fashion trend with the boots in the United States. Knowing he had already once successfully introduced modern products to a new market, he bought a few pair and began his business of manufacturing the sheepskin boots on a large scale.
Upon his return to California, Watt found a manufacturer who could produce and silkscreen the ponchos that had sold well in New Zealand and began an import/export business to balance the trade of his sheepskin boots. By combining his own market research and concept development with the natural properties and benefits of sheepskin, Watt was able to bring innovation and true comfort to an unexplored market here in the United States.
In 1989, Aussie Dogs Original Sheepskin Footwear was officially born and Watt began selling his sheepskin boots to local surf shops and boutique shoe stores. Throughout the growth of Aussie Dogs, the brand has maintained its commitment to providing superior footwear built from top quality materials, superior construction and creative design to every customer.
